Bulk Salt Saturators
|Salt is used to regenerate water softeners and the cost of salt is dependent upon the volume purchased and the form in which it is supplied. When larger water softeners are used it may be financially beneficial to purchase the salt in bulk.
The lowest cost form of salt is Pure Dried Vacuum (PDV). This salt is blown from the delivery tanker and into the bulk salt saturator storage tank through the aluminium salt feed pipe. A float valve contained within the saturator allows water to enter the saturator via a spray bar in the top of the saturator vessel. As the water sprays onto the salt brine is produced. Once it reaches a concentration of approximately 25% by weight the brine solution is saturated and no more salt will dissolve. The concentrated brine percolates through the salt and into the gravel bed in the base of the unit where it is collected and transferred either by gravity or pump to the base exchange plant for regeneration.
